“Did you get a chance to read today’s Express-News?” Danny asked as they walked back to their office. “I was going to ask you before the meeting started, but there wasn’t a good time.”

Randy shook his head. “Why? Is there another article about how people are dropping like flies all over the city, and we’re just sitting around on our butts, eating donuts? If so, then I didn’t see it, because I’m tired of reading how incompetent we are. I’m avoiding the newspaper if I can, except for the comics and sports section. If they start badmouthing us on there, too, I’m really going to be mad, because I won’t have anything left to read.”

“That’s probably in there somewhere, but I mean this.” Danny turned to the Metro section and handed it to Randy.

Randy read the article, then looked quizzically at his partner. “What about it?”

“That guy, George Stevens, he’s charged with brokering a land deal that cheated some old folks out of their money.”

“So? I mean, I feel sorry for them, but we’ve got more important things to worry about. That’ll be up to the fraud unit to investigate, not us.”

“You must be losing it, Monroe. He’s a wealthy real estate agent, and he owns several offices here in town. Did you miss that part?”

“No, I saw that. One of us must be losing it, because I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Randy ran his fingers through his hair with a weary sigh. “What am I missing?”

“Thou shalt not steal.”

Randy looked at his partner, then turned back to the article. “What have you been doing, going through the newspaper looking for wealthy people breaking commandments?”

“Yeah, it seemed like a good idea, since the other guys are going through the archives for old arrest records. I mean, our killer must be getting his information some place, so why not the newspaper? I’ve also been paying a lot of attention to the newscasts, but I haven’t seen anything that looks promising. I know the perp has to have some personal knowledge of the victims, because of Dr. Warren, but that’s just one case. Dr. Warren doing abortions wasn’t publicized, but the Carlson and Wynn cases were both in the paper, so I wondered if that’s where he’s getting his victims. I figured it was at least worth a try.”

“You may be on to something. We haven’t found any one person that all the victims knew, so that’s as good a theory as anything else. What do we know about Stevens?”

“I ducked out of the meeting this morning while y’all were going over scenarios, and called the reporter that interviewed him for that article. Stevens is forty years old, Caucasian, roughly five feet nine inches tall, and weighs about one hundred and fifty pounds. He’s married, and they have three kids.”

“He certainly fits the pattern as far as his height and weight goes. Did you find out anything else?”

“Not much. He doesn’t have an arrest record.”

“Right now, it’s all conjecture.
